In the first 9 month of the project we developed a seated Augmented Reality display system for collaborative work environments, called Spinnstube, which is the hardware base for our Augmented Reality Teaching Platform (ARTP). By simply attaching the platform to a desk, real objects are augmented with virtual objects by using a see-through mirror. The display system is designed in a way that its components do not interfere with a table. So a free interaction area is created on the desktop. By arranging up to 4 of these systems around a table, a collaborative work environment can be created.
To guarantee maximum flexibility, the system is constructed freely movable and adjustable to a work environment and a user. Due to the fact that the construction is made from aluminium and only conventional hardware is used, the system fits well to two main requirements while using it in school environments: robustness and cost-effectiveness.
To gather feedback from e-Learning specialists as well as the scientific community we presented the system on a variety of exhibitions, fairs and conferences (see References). The system itself is in a permanent development and improvement process closely coupled with the intermediate results and outcomes of the project.
